THIS IS THE ORIGINAL INVITATION TO EVERYBODY TO JOIN THE FREE PARKING PLEDGE.  IT IS HERE BECAUSE OF HISTORICAL INTEREST AND TO SHOW HOW THIS WAS ACHIEVED FOR THE TOWN

Arun District Council considered the Bognor Regis Free Parking petition and decided to merely “note” it.   It is vitally important that they recognise the massive support there is for this throughout the area. Somehow, there are certain Councillors who contrive to make light of 5,807 signatures of the public, not to mention the backing of the Town Council, the Chamber of Commerce, Bognor TBI, the Federation of Small Businesses, the Town Centre Traders and the Civic Society.  Somehow, some of these Councillors think they know best...

So we are asking you to help by adding to all the pledges already received during the election.  Every pledge helps to add to the massive support already given, so Please pledge NOW  in support of the 5,807 signature petition on free two-hour parking in the Town Centre car parks.  Pledge now by simply placing your name and email address in the boxes below and clicking ‘submit.’  See below if you’d like to know which candidates pledged support for the petition during the May 2011 election.  Also to see how many of the public have pledged so far.

Your name and e-mail address are secure and will NOT be published or passed on to anybody else.   But below you will see that we will be showing the number of people who have pledged in support of the petition.  And we will keep you posted from time to time on the progress of this.

And below you will also see that we have listed the May 2011 election candidates and whether or not they  confirmed a pledge to us in support of the petition.  Elected candidates are shown in bold type.

The pledge was announced on Friday 11th March 2011 and it took time for significant numbers to build up.  But the public have responded magnificently to our call for pledges, although whether it made any difference to election results will never be truly known.   The vital thing is that all election candidates were forced to acknowledge the importance of the issue, rather than sweep it under the carpet, as some might have preferred.  

But it doesn’t stop here.  Arun District Council considered the Free Parking petition and decided to merely “note” it.  It is important that they realise the massive support for the petition throughout the area.  So please keep on sending in your pledges of support, and we will continue to show the growing numbers below.  Keep them coming!

Below is the list of  Bognor Regis area Arun District Council May 2011 election candidates, and those elected are shown in bold type. They are in alphabetical order by surname, and although we try to ignore politics, it must be mentioned that there is a certain political resonance in who has and has not pledged.

To some, no pledge is an indication that the person is either ignorant of the wide public, commercial and community support for the Free Parking petition, or simply doesn’t care and is content to ignore the wishes of the people of Bognor Regis.  Neither can be regarded as a good attribute in one who is seeking election to public office.
